Intel 8080 CPU Tester
This tester is used to check DIP-40 pin 8080 CPU’s from Intel
While the tester does not test every function of the 8080, it tests enough to ensure the 8080 is working or faulty.
CPU Tests:
– Test all address and data lines
– Executes instructions from RAM/ROM so this tests all address and data lines
– Pulses INTE line
– Read/write checks to RAM
– 4 Output LED’s are addressed via a 8255 (Programmable Peripheral Interface (PPI) chip)
– CPU Clock generated from a 8224 (Clock generator)
– Control lines managed by 8228 (System controller)
– Startup voltages (5V, -5V, 12V) are managed by a microcontroller to ensure the correct starting sequence. (5V, then 12V, then -5V)
Included:
1 x 8080 CPU Tester (The actual 8080 CPU is not included in the sale)
Usage:
Insert the 8080 CPU into the ZIF socket and make sure the orientation is correct. (Pin 1 top left)
Connect a mini USB Type B cable (Not supplied) from your PC (Or 5V USB charger) to the CPU Tester.
With a working 8080 CPU the code will be executed from the ROM which pulses on the INTE LED, and then pulses on 4 LED’s. This test is repeated in a loop.
If you have a faulty 8080 either the code will not start, so no LED’s will light, or it will freeze while pulsing through the LED’s
See attached video for the output on a working 8080.
Item will be shipped with Royal Mail Tracked 48.
As a added bonus you could also use this device to test 8255, 8224 and 8228 chips as they are socketed. If you remove them to test make sure of the orientation and do not bend the pins.
Note: The vintage 8228, 8224 chips run warm so it’s not advisable to leave the tester running for too long (Unless you add extra heatsinks to the chips)
